As the VP of Employee Relations for G4S, I had the privilege of a front row seat when Mike Hogsten unveiled what would become the G4S Dignity and Respect Program. We knew he was on to something when employees at all levels up to and including the top reach es of management embraced the concept of something that was simple yet so meaningful that it had the power to positively impact the culture in the workplace. Moreover, we saw workplace complaints, EEO charges and sexual harassment complaints decrease subst antially so there came a very real ROI as the program grew and gained footing.

When it comes to company HR initiatives and personnel actions, the Dignity and Respect program is effective for each part of the employee experience, from application, to traini ng, to talent assessments and management to day – to – day interactions with co – workers, especially when all employees begin speaking the language of Dignity and Respect. I found it particularly impactful for our Diversity and Inclusion programs. While there i s one type of work in hiring a diverse workforce, the real effort comes when focusing on the “Inclusion” part of D&I. How do you manage a diverse workforce where there may be a multitude of working styles and perspectives? Mike’s Dignity and Respect progra m led our Inclusion efforts as it embraced the positive and thoughtful treatment of our employees . From a compliance standpoint, whether we were being audited by agencies such as the DOL/OFCCP or preparing position statements for the EEOC, the Dignity and Respect program told the company’s story and garnered positive results. Our clients liked it too!

From an employee engagement perspective, all levels enthusiastically joined in to become Dignity and Respect Champions. Many became part of voluntary Dignity and Respect committees, finding their voices and positively impacting the workplace. Several gained more confidence from leading these committees to pursue higher level career positions at G4S as it enhanced their engagement and commitment to the company.

Personally, this program was a game changer for me, primarily when it came to my own self – reflection with respect to my interactions with colleagues. I am convinced it made me a better employee and a better manager. “Dignity and Respect” continues to whi sper in my ear and reminds me to search for the thoughtful answer, to treat others as they want to be treated and to listen to learn.
